A. The Thunderbolt 3 port is, in fact, a Type-C port, however it transfers data at a much faster speed of 40 Gb/s. A standard Type-C port will operate at 5 Gb/s. The Thunderbolt 3 port also has the ability to display video and pass power through into the Macbook Pro, whereas a standard Type-C port cannot.
Is it possible to run dual monitors with this product?
What is the advantage of the Pro Hub rather than the Multi-Port Adapter?
Both the Pro Hub and Multi-Port are part of our Type-C collection and are geared towards MacBook users. However, the main feature of the Pro Hub is that it adds a Thunderbolt 3 port, for up to 40Gb/s data transfer, up to 5K video display capabilities and pass through charging. The Pro Hub also adds another Type-C port, in addition to the Thunderbolt 3, to fulfill more data transfer needs. It also features the same ports as the Multi-Port Adapter's original ports, with the exception of the Ethernet.
The way these adapters connect to a MacBook differs on both models. The Pro Hub uses two-pronged Type-C connectors and fits flush to a Macbook Pro. The Multi-Port connects with a short wire to a Thunderbolt 3 port on Macbooks and Macbook Pros.
Can a hard shell case around the MacBook be used when plugging in this adapter?
No, the Pro Hub adapter was designed to sit flush against the side of the MacBook and a case will not allow the Pro Hub to fully connect into the Thunderbolt 3 ports.
If you have a case on your MacBook, we would recommend the Type-C Multi-Port Adapter which has very similar ports but connects through a wired Type-C connection.
Are all the USB-C ports the same?
The first USB-C port, nearest the HDMI, supports pass-through charging and up to 5K video output. The second USB-C port was added on primarily for data transfer purposes, not pass-through charging (iPads, MacBook Pro, etc.) and video output. However, it should be able to power smaller USB devices such as an iPhone.
How to connect a HDMI display
When connecting an external monitor via HDMI port, we recommend using a direct HDMI to HDMI connection for best display and performance. Please note when changing video signal source, your monitor may flicker for a few seconds. Normal operation should resume within 5 seconds. Also, you may connect maximum of one external display via HDMI port and two displays through the first USB-C port.
